Whether you are starting a new business or refocusing for the New Year it’s not too late to set your 2010 goals for this coming year.

I’m not much for New Year’s resolutions and I’ll tell you why. Every year I hear pretty much the same thing.  Tell me if this rings true for you!

First off, most people will say “My New Year’s Resolution is to (as an example) lose weight.”  Okay let’s take that to the next level.  How much weight do you want to lose and what are some of the reasons to sustain this “Resolution”?   Let’s even take a moment to look at the word “Resolution” while we’re at it.

“Resolve”, “resolute”, “to declare to resolve to be different”; these are good root words and I’ll give you another one to help you to keep that resolve, (if that is what you want to do?)  Of course it is!  Right?  After all, you do it every year!!  Seriously though, how about the word “Commit”?  Now there is a strong word!  To whom do you plan to make that commitment?  You?  I mean, if you are resolving to do a certain thing in your life, making a commitment to one’s self can be weak.  Why?  Because who is going to keep you accountable to yourself?  YOU!  And we know how that goes– no guilt here — just the cold hard reality about how resolutions to one’s self tend to slip. We go from a strong resolve to eating healthy, exercising and going to the gym, to “oh, this came up and that appointment is more important and I gotta land that deal” and so on and so on.  You get the picture!

I say all this to make the point that without a commitment to someone besides just ourselves, we tend to let things slide and then another year of procrastination creeps in.   And really who wants that to happen?  This just starts another set of problems; not the least of these being the “G” word… guilt!!

Now lets look at goals and goal setting.  I’ll use weight loss as an example since that is where I started with this.  My thoughts on this is to get as specific as one can get about how things will look.  How so?  Okay, let’s break it down.

Remember at the beginning of this blog I titled it; measurable attainable goals?  Here are some of my thoughts…..

Ask yourself the following question.  What is it I want to accomplish? Start by writing down a list of words that describe a picture of what it is that you want and are willing to commit to.  Here are some words that come to mind for me.  Weight loss, fitness, health, becoming healthy, healthy balance, freedom, freedom of movement, celebration. You can add your own list from here.  These are all part of one goal – Now let’s break it down even further….

“How much weight do you want to lose?”   “What will it take to lose this amount of weight?”  Well, you are going to “get” to change your eating habits, right? You will “get” to make new and different choices.  You “get” to introduce yourself to new and different recipes and ways of cooking and preparing your food.  This doesn’t have to be a drag, you can make a game of it.  Better yet, just becoming curious about how this new lifestyle may help your over all view on life, and  may just spill over into other parts of your life, and even your family and the way you even do business! Yep, that’s possible; anything is possible!  If you create a running conversation within yourself for change as a positive experience then the  “I have to” becomes a greatly anticipated “I get to”!  Now, there are some real tools for success.

Tell me what some of your thoughts are about what I’ve written here?  Agree?  Disagree?  I can’t wait to hear from you!!!!

Now on to another area that may not be on your radar as of yet or maybe you have done this before but haven’t visited it lately.  What I am talking about is your “Mission Statement”

Aloha for now,

Coach Kathleen
